Fägfüür

By John Patrick Shanley - Savage in Limbo
translation by Katrin Hilbe

Fägfüür was a real first for ManyTracks. For a number of years I’ve been on the lookout for a play I could produce in my "other" home country Liechtenstein, and when I discovered John Patrick Shanley’s Savage in Limbo, I knew I had a winner.

It’s a wonderful funny and visceral take on a bunch of lovely miserable egocentrics who need to learn that the world is bigger than just them. At its center lies the most beautiful call for empathy, a scene of poetic force, and I wished to share.

And then amazing things happened. I embarked on a translation into our local Liechtenstein dialect, found the best cast, but they ended up being a mix of Liechtenstein, Swiss, and Austrian!
These regions are very close together, but the people don’t mix all that much. Suddenly they did, in Murk’s bar, and we heard all three dialects on one stage!

We performed the story of these five misfits looking for the good life in all the wrong places in Liechtenstein, Austria and Switzerland!

It was heady and exciting, and the effect was powerful. One audience member told me, that while he usually experiences dialect productions as diminishing the language , pulling it more earth-bound, in this case, with three varieties in five characters, it became its own unique theatrical metaphor.
